DE'JA' VUE AND THE CONCEPT OF THE NOW

It's occured to me at various times throughout my life and rather recently when I have experienced that strange phenomen known as deja'vu'(my own definition being a breif sensation of seeming to be reliving a previous experience almost as if it is a recording, and knowing exactly what will occur)may have a little to do with my concept of 'the now'.
I've heard all of my life people say that we should stay in the now, live one day at a time and so on.But that has been one of the most difficult of situations for me to comprehend.  I've sometimes wondered how it would be if we could somehow not have day and night.  That is to say, if the sun never would set but stay in a fixed point in the sky always.  We count time or our days based upon the spinning of the earth on it's axis.  One complete spin equaling a day.  And when the sun sets and remains out of view, we perceive that period as night, and the opposite as day.  But what if we did not have these two periods.  What if it was always day or daylight.  That would be a strange world to live in, but I think it would  more closely reflect the real world than what we see now.  If this strange situation would somehow become the norm for us and become accepted, then would it not appear to us as all the same day forever?  Always in the now? No concept of the past nor future?
Could the experience of 'deja' vue', be another way of our continuing experiences of the 'now'?  I have found these questions to be most fascinating as well as intellectually stimulating and will continue to ask and to solicit feedback.  What are your thoughts on this/  Please leave a comment.

  1. Interesting thoughts on the "now" and on the effect of always being day... I like this rumination.

  3. There really is no 'now' because the moment we live in the 'now' it has moved on. Even if the sun never set and the moon never showed its face, we would still be moving forward doing the things we think we are supose to be doing in the 'now'. The 'now really has nothing to do with time at all, past or present it has to do with trends and what is popular at the current moment. the 'now' is always changing, so as people trying to live in the 'now' we are always changing. As for Deja vu, i would like to believe that it is a sign that we are doing the right thing that wa are following the path that was laid out for us. i think of it as a check point. As random as it is Deja vu is, to me, a reminder of something greater then our selves.

  4. just found this article after searching about Deja vu's as I just had one. It was really weird because I was working on my computer and for a slit second everything around me, including on my computer screen became familiar to me and as weird as this sounds I had an overwhelming feeling that I should remember something. To try and explain it, it felt like the deja vu was a point in time that I had been before and the last time I was there I told myself I must remember something but I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was. It was so surreal and it feels really strange when I think about it.
Regarding your thoughts on time being determind my day and night, it's an interesting thought but I feel theres a bit more to it than that. Think about it, so long as we have this reality there will always be a concept of time. As well as the many factors that would determin this the main one would be motion. As an example, Theres two men each on a train platform, one at the starting station and one at the destination station. The train is half way towards its destination station. Each of the two men are thinking about the train. The person waiting at the destination will be waiting for the future and the person at the starting station would be concieving the past.
Speech is another thing that creates time as you used to say ga ga when you was a baby. So as you see time goes a lot deeped that just night and day, thinking about it, time really is tied into everything in this reality. Theres no escaping it.
I disagree with the anonymous comment above me who was trying to point out that there is no presence or 'the now' because if you have a future and a past you have to have something in the middle. No matter how small of a fraction of a moment every now is, it has to exsist otherwise there would be no time. The past is made up of all the 'nows' that have ever happened and vicer versa for the future.
Sorry this is so long, it was very interesting to read and it got me going. Ha Ha
